Mohombi is the first signing to 2101 Records and he is multitalented! As a talent songwriter, artist and dancer, Mohombi explains that he has only one goal in his life, to make good Music!
He draws his musical background on his heritage – he is half Congolese, half Swedish - and defines his fresh, irresistible party sounds as Afro-Viking. “It’s music that sounds like my story,” he says.
Mohombi began chasing his musical dream at a very young age. When he relocated to Sweden, he attended and graduated from Adolf-Fredriks Music School and Rytmus Music HS in Stockholm. His first artist career began as a rapper/singer in the group Avalon, which he formed with his brothers. “I think we sounded different but still accessible…’ Mohombi says now of Avalon, “We were still Congolese but we offered a twist on it - we were music of the day like R&B, dancehall and hip-hop”. Between 2004 and 2008 they sold half a million albums, picked up an African Grammy and performed alongside Ludacris, Ginuwine and Musiq Soulchild. As he continued down this musical path, Mohombi became a marvelous songwriter and producer, not just writing for his group, but for other artists across the globe.
In 2009, Mohombi met fellow Swedish Grammy-winning producer RedOne, and the two clicked instantly. “He’d heard that I was a songwriter,” Mohombi recalls. “But he was also interested that I was an artist.” In the summer of 2010, RedOne not only welcomed Mohombi into his hit-making camp as a songwriter but he also co-wrote and produced his debut single, “Bumpy Ride.” RedOne also made Mohombi the first signing to 2101 Records and is about to release Mohombi’s 1st album MoveMeant.
While his new material takes a big leap forward, it’s not even that different in spirit from his original tunes that he used to knock out with his brother. Most of the records on his album have a 90s rave dance feel. “That’s what makes it so honest for me,” he says. “The motion and the rhythm are really African - rhythmic, dancey, but what we tried to do was merge the African feel with 90s words and melodies.” The result is something that sounds very 2010. “Red took it to the next level, modernized it, gave it his touch and his pop flavor,” Mohombi says. “He’s an amazing pop producer first of all - he’s a hitmaker.” Mohombi is very excited to share his story and his 1st album, MoveMeant, with the world.
“It feels like my life is all about movement,” Mohombi says. “I don’t know where I’ll end up. Maybe nowhere, maybe everywhere. It’s ‘the long road’, as we say in Congo,” Mohombi says. “A bumpy ride, but an exciting one.”
